Hobbit

The original American dramatizations, as broadcast on National Public Radio.
Open the enchanted door to Middle Earth. Listen, and relive this great epic by J. R. R. Tolkienâ€"the story of a middle-aged hobbit who joins a band of dwarves seeking to reclaim their treasure from the dreadful dragon Smaug.

Bilbo not only succeeds in this unexpected adventure, but he also discovers a treasure of his ownâ€"an incredible ring with unbelievable powers! This is the very ring that sets the stage for Tolkien's magnificent trilogy, Lord of the Rings!

J. R. R. Tolkien's classic story comes in a handsome, wood-branded gift box."In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

The hobbit-hole in question belongs to one Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of a "little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves." He is, like most of his kind, well off, well fed, and best pleased when sitting by his own fire with a pipe, a glass of good beer, and a meal to look forward to. Certainly this particular hobbit is the last person one would expect to see set off on a hazardous journey; indeed, when Gandalf the Grey stops by one morning, "looking for someone to share in an adventure," Baggins fervently wishes the wizard elsewhere. No such luck, however; soon 13 fortune-seeking dwarves have arrived on the hobbit's doorstep in search of a burglar, and before he can even grab his hat or an umbrella, Bilbo Baggins is swept out his door and into a dangerous adventure.

The dwarves' goal is to return to their ancestral home in the Lonely Mountains and reclaim a stolen fortune from the dragon Smaug. Along the way, they and their reluctant companion meet giant spiders, hostile elves, ravening wolves--and, most perilous of all, a subterranean creature named Gollum from whom Bilbo wins a magical ring in a riddling contest. It is from this life-or-death game in the dark that J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork, The Lord of the Rings, would eventually spring. Though The Hobbit is lighter in tone than the trilogy that follows, it has, like Bilbo Baggins himself, unexpected iron at its core. Don't be fooled by its fairy-tale demeanor; this is very much a story for adults, though older children will enjoy it, too. By the time Bilbo returns to his comfortable hobbit-hole, he is a different person altogether, well primed for the bigger adventures to come--and so is the reader. --Alix Wilber

The Sound of Distant Thunder: An Appalachian Novel

This is the story of revenge, mountain style. It is not a mystery in the truest sense of the word and it is not a love story, but it has elements of both. The rugged and individualistic people of the Blue Ridge mountains will wait patiently for the courts to mete out justice, but if that justice is too slow in coming, or if justice should miscarry because of slick lawyers and poor laws, then a vaccum is created--in time, every vacuum must be filled. Be forewarned: This is not Snuffy Smith or Li’l Abner. “The Sound of distant Thunder” is the winner of the 1999 Book of the Year award of the Appalachian Writers Association, an award won in the past by such writers as Sharyn McCrumb, Charles Frazier and, this year, by Robert Morgan.

Question by geekazoid: What horror movie is it where a man finds a small dog sliced in half, still moving?

It was a horror or something from the 80's and they dog looked like the monopoly dog. It also had a part where some blonde took off her clothes down to her underwear saying she was burning up or so hot.. something like that.

What is the importance of literature in our society?

I have a major presentation on literature and I'm having trouble. I know literature is important and it effects basically everything, but I'm having trouble putting it into the right words.

Answer by nikki.....
Literature is the basis of all human arts....all forms of expression. It was only until writers learnt to express themselves in words that artists began to express themselves through pictures. Literature put emphasis on humanism: the ability and greatness of an individual that until the Romantic Era, our world knew nothing about. All the different ages have been identified and emphasised in LITERATURE...the modernist era (the modernist idea of "newness" was expressed through new literary forms like free verse)

San Diego'S Fishing Industry, CA (IMG) (Images of America (San Diego, Ca))

San Diego has always attracted a rich diversity of immigrant groups. Between the 1880s and 1970s, many of these groups helped to create a strong and dynamic fishing industry that became a key component of the cityÂ’s identity. Waves of varied immigrants continually refreshed the industry, adapting their traditional skills and technologies to San Diegan conditions. Innovations in boat design, nets, and baiting techniques reshaped the fleets that harvested tuna and sardines from the teeming waters. On shore, canning factories sprang up, seafood markets bustled with activity, and fish restaurants filled with hungry diners. The vivid stories and fascinating photographs in this volume recapture the energy and variety that were the hallmarks of San DiegoÂ’s fishing industryÂâ€"an industry that has left a deep multicultural imprint on todayÂ’s city.
